  • Anniversary Getaway, 2025

After 33 years we may be getting better at planning and traveling together. We’ve had a number of discussions over the last few years about what’s worked well in the past – and what hasn’t worked so well. And, as much as we love our children, it probably also helps that we only had ourselves to worry about for this trip.

We’d heard about a special exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Reagan Presidential Library and were keen to see some of that history for ourselves. The library is a little bit of a drive from where we live and so we decided to expand the itinerary and include some fun along the way. Fortunately, Los Angeles was on the way and — amongst a number of things, some troubling — is known for entertainment. And a theme park based on movies is about as Hollywood as it comes. So, Universal Studios here we come.

A two-days-for-one ticket meant we didn’t have to rush everything. That worked well for me as many roller coasters in a row doesn’t sit as awesomely as it used to. The bus tour through the studio backlots and sets was both interesting — the classic Jaws attack put a smile on my face — and a chance to rest. Plenty of fun to be had and we penciled in the return trip for December.

Following the fun, we made our way up to Simi Valley for a quiet night of theme park recovery. Next morning we found the Reagan Library had some superb views of the valley itself, as well as housing an extensive collection of artefacts and memorabilia, tied together with a narrative of Reagan’s life and political career. Some interesting tidbits for me was a replica of the Oval Office as it was during his time there, including jars of Jelly Bellys, and the suit he was wearing during the attempted assassination. The pavilion housing Air Force One and Marine One was also impressive.

We didn’t dwell too much on Ronald’s exploits, making our way with steady progress to the raison du jour. A very well-crafted exhibit with plenty of key and side information, it was well attended but not crowded. Though I only have sporadic interest in history, seeing the ancient scrolls themselves was undoubtedly the highlight.

Most celebrations that include Gaynor should have some memorable food and we found some coeliac-friendly Italian fare that hit that gastronomic spot. And then, finally, what is an anniversary trip without convincing a fine restaurant to proffer a free dessert? I think as long as you don’t show up with that claim every week you’ve got a shot.

If you cannot do something as simple and obvious as eliminating the penny, you cannot do anything more complicated.

For those playing along at home, here is the completed puzzle. Remember “3+ years” on a puzzle doesn’t refer to how long it will take.
